  • If you own a house in Sint-Niklaas built before 2001, there is a good chance that asbestos is present somewhere. It is often well hidden: behind a wall, under a floor, or around an old central heating pipe in the cellar. As long as the material is undamaged and you don't disturb it, the risk is limited. But as soon as you start renovating, replacing a roof, or removing a floor, dust is released. And that is exactly the moment when you need a licensed asbestos removal contractor.

    Common asbestos jobs in Sint-Niklaas

In neighbourhoods with houses from the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s, the same applications keep recurring. The most common are:

    • Asbestos pipe insulation around heating pipes in the cellar. That white, crumbly layer with hessian wrapping is typical of houses up to the 1980s.
    • Vinyl flooring with an asbestos-containing backing or black bituminous adhesive. Especially in kitchens and utility rooms of homes built between 1955 and 1985.
    • Asbestos cement roofs and cladding, such as corrugated sheets on a garage, shed, or canopy. These are often in better condition, but if they break or are sanded, fibres are released.

Each application requires a different approach. That is why we always carry out a site survey first.

    Our approach: safe and compliant

As a licensed asbestos removal contractor, we use the three legally recognised techniques. For bonded asbestos in good condition, a simple operation may suffice. For damaged or friable materials, such as pipe insulation, we set up a hermetic zone with negative pressure. That negative pressure is there to stop dust from reaching the rest of your home.

We carefully remove the asbestos and seal it airtight in sheeting of at least 100 microns. We then transport it to a licensed processing facility. You do not need to take it to the recycling centre yourself. You can read more about our method on the page about asbestos removal.

    Specific situations in Sint-Niklaas

Take, for example, an old boiler in the cellar of a terraced house in the area around Sint-Niklaasstraat. The pipes are insulated with asbestos-containing material. As long as you do not replace the heating system, it can stay. But during a renovation, it must be removed. We take it out in a hermetic zone. You can find more about this procedure at asbestos pipe insulation removal.

Vinyl flooring is also common. Often there is a black adhesive layer underneath that contains asbestos. That brittle layer poses the greatest risk. We remove both the floor and the adhesive, so you can safely lay a new floor afterwards. Also take a look at the page about asbestos vinyl floor removal.

For roofs with asbestos cement sheets, such as on an old garden shed or garage, it is best not to break them yourself. We remove them whole and in sections, and ensure proper disposal. You can read more on the page about asbestos roof removal.

    Why use a licensed company?

You are only allowed to remove asbestos yourself if it is bonded, undamaged material up to 35 m², and only if you submit a demolition notification. Damaged material, friable insulation, or glued floor coverings? It is prohibited to do these yourself. As a licensed asbestos removal contractor, we have the knowledge, equipment, and experience to do it safely. We also take care of the disposal to a certified processor. We explain our licence and method on the page about the licensed asbestos removal contractor.

Do you live in Sint-Niklaas or the surrounding area and suspect asbestos in your home? Schedule a free site visit. We will take a look, explain what needs to be done, and give you a clear proposal. This way you know exactly where you stand.

    Good to know

Since 23 November 2022, an asbestos certificate is mandatory when selling a home built before 2001. A certified asbestos expert issues the certificate; we remove the asbestos listed in it.

    Frequently asked questions

How do I know if there is asbestos in my home in Sint-Niklaas?
An asbestos certificate or inventory by a certified asbestos expert provides clarity. Especially for homes built before 2001, the risk is real. During a site visit, we can often give an indication, but for an official certificate you need to see an asbestos expert.
Can I remove asbestos myself in Sint-Niklaas?
Only bonded, undamaged asbestos up to 35 m² may be removed by yourself, after a demolition notification. Damaged material, friable insulation or glued floor coverings must always be handled by a certified company.
How much does asbestos removal cost in Sint-Niklaas?
The cost depends on the type of asbestos, the quantity and the complexity. Request a free site visit for an accurate quote. There are no fixed prices, but we give you a clear price upfront.
How long does asbestos removal at my home take?
That depends on the scope. A simple handling can be done in half a day, while a hermetic zone can take several days. We schedule it so that the disruption to you is minimal.
What happens to the asbestos waste in Sint-Niklaas?
We package the asbestos airtight in foil of at least 100 microns and transport it to a certified processor. So you don't have to go to the recycling centre yourself: we take care of the disposal.
