  2. 02How we go about it

Mechelen has a rich history, but it also has a downside. Many homes in the region were built before 2001 and contain asbestos. Often it is hidden in places you wouldn't immediately look: around old heating pipes, under vinyl flooring, or in the corrugated sheets of a canopy. If you don't recognise it, it can remain unnoticed for decades. Until you start renovating or get a leak. Then it comes to light and needs to be removed quickly and correctly.

Credim is a licensed asbestos removal contractor and also operates in Mechelen. From Stabroek we are quickly at your doorstep, whether you live in the centre or in a sub-municipality such as Battel or Heffen. We work throughout Flanders, but for Mechelen: we know the typical homes and their pitfalls.

The most common asbestos jobs in Mechelen homes

In the city centre and neighbourhoods from the 1950s to the 1980s, we regularly come across the same situations. One of these is asbestos around pipes. That crumbly, white or grey layer around central heating pipes in the cellar is not ordinary plaster. Often there is still a white jute cloth around it. As long as you don't touch it, the risk is limited. But during a renovation or a leak, you want it removed professionally.

Old vinyl floors are also a classic. Especially in utility rooms and hallways from the 1960s and 1970s. The vinyl itself is usually not the problem, but the black bituminous adhesive underneath. That brittle layer can contain asbestos. It is precisely that brittleness that makes it risky. It is one of the reasons why we always handle asbestos-containing vinyl floors with the necessary precautions.

Then there are the roofs. Corrugated sheets of sheds, carports, or old boiler rooms. In Mechelen, you still see them surprisingly often. If they are undamaged, the risk is limited. But if they are deteriorating or need replacing, asbestos dust is released. Removing an asbestos roof is then not a job for the DIY enthusiast, but for someone who knows what they are doing.

How we go about it

First, we come for a site visit. We look at where the asbestos is and what condition it is in. Then we choose the right technique. For bonded material with little risk, a simple action may suffice. For damaged or friable asbestos, we set up a sealed zone with negative pressure.

All asbestos is packed airtight in foil of at least 100 microns. Then we transport it ourselves to a licensed processing facility. You don't have to go to the recycling centre; we take care of that.

Are you planning to insulate? Then combine asbestos removal with roof or wall insulation. Through the Mijn VerbouwPremie you may qualify for a supplement. The conditions change regularly, so check our explanation about asbestos removal or look at mijnverbouwpremie.be for the current amount.

Do you live in Mechelen and suspect asbestos in your home? Contact us for a free site visit. We will look together at what needs to be done and give you a clear plan. No obligations, just good advice.

Good to know

Since 23 November 2022, an asbestos certificate is mandatory when selling a home built before 2001. A certified asbestos expert issues the certificate, not us. But we do remove what the certificate identifies.

Frequently asked questions

Can I remove asbestos myself in Mechelen?
For bonded, undamaged asbestos up to 35 m², you may do it yourself, but only if it is screwed and you have submitted a demolition notification via the Omgevingsloket. Anything that is friable, damaged or glued must be done by a certified removal company.
How do I recognise asbestos around my pipes?
That crumbly white or grey layer around old central heating pipes is often asbestos, especially in homes from before the 1980s. Often there is white jute fabric around it. You only have 100% certainty after a sample analysis. Do not scrape or sand it, as this releases fibres.
What does asbestos removal cost in Mechelen?
That depends on the quantity, the type and the level of difficulty. Request a free site visit and you will receive a clear, tailored price. This way you know exactly where you stand in advance.
Can I bring asbestos to the recycling park?
Private individuals may bring up to 200 kg of asbestos per year free of charge to the recycling park, but it must be packaged airtight. You may never transport friable asbestos yourself. We arrange the disposal for you.
Is Credim certified for asbestos removal in Mechelen?
Yes, Credim is a certified asbestos removal company and works throughout Flanders, including Mechelen. We master all legal techniques and work safely and in accordance with the regulations.
