If you own a house in Ostend built before 2001, sooner or later you will have to deal with asbestos. The coast has many homes from the 1950s to the 1980s, precisely the period when asbestos was widely used. It is not always where you expect it. In a cellar in Mariakerke or a flat in the centre, you often come across the same applications. As a licensed asbestos removal company, we work from Stabroek, but we come to Ostend and the rest of the coast every day.

What we often remove on the coast

The most common job we encounter here is asbestos-containing pipe insulation around old central heating pipes. That white, crumbly layer, often wrapped in jute cloth, is found in many cellars from before the 1980s. As long as it remains intact, the risk is limited. But during a renovation or a leak, dust can be released. Old vinyl floors are also a classic. Especially the black bituminous adhesive underneath can contain asbestos and is brittle. And then there are the corrugated sheet roofs and cladding. In Ostend, we often see these on garages, canopies and outbuildings.

Do it yourself or hire a licensed company?

What you are allowed to do yourself is limited. You may remove up to 35 m² of bonded asbestos yourself if it is undamaged and screwed, but the rules are strict. Friable material or damaged applications must be handled by a licensed company. We master the three legal techniques: a simple operation for bonded material in good condition, a glove bag for pipe insulation in the open air, and a hermetic zone with negative pressure for indoor pipe insulation and other riskier work.

From site visit to disposal

During a site visit in Ostend, we first look at what exactly is present. Sometimes people think they have asbestos, but it turns out to be just plaster or another material. In other cases, it only becomes clear during a renovation that there is an asbestos-containing vinyl floor. We then take samples or work on the basis of an asbestos certificate, which is drawn up by a certified expert. We remove what the certificate indicates. We also handle the disposal: the asbestos is packed airtight in foil of at least 100 microns and taken to a licensed processor. So you do not have to go to the recycling centre yourself.

Combining with insulation

Are you planning to insulate or renovate? If you combine asbestos removal with roof or wall insulation, you may be eligible for a supplement under the Mijn VerbouwPremie. The conditions change, so check the current amount on mijnverbouwpremie.be. Would you first like to know what is in your home? We will come to Ostend for a free site visit and give you honest advice. No obligations, just clarity.

Good to know

Since 23 November 2022, an asbestos certificate is mandatory when selling a home built before 2001. By 2032, every owner must have one. Request it from a certified asbestos expert.

Frequently asked questions

Can I remove asbestos myself in Ostend?
You may only remove bonded, undamaged asbestos up to 35 m² yourself, if it is screwed. To do so, you must submit a demolition notification via the Environmental Counter. Friable asbestos, such as pipe insulation, or damaged material must always be removed by a certified removal company.
How do I know if my pipe insulation contains asbestos?
Asbestos-containing pipe insulation is often a crumbly, white or grey layer around heating pipes, usually in basements of houses up to the 1980s. It is often wrapped in white jute cloth. A visual check is not 100% certain; a sample analysis provides certainty. You should definitely not scratch or sand it.
What does asbestos removal cost in Ostend?
The price depends on the type of asbestos, the quantity and the level of difficulty. That is why we do not give standard prices. After a free site visit, you will receive a clear, tailored quote.
How long does asbestos removal take?
That depends on the job. A simple handling can be done in half a day; for a hermetic zone, allow one to several days. We always schedule in consultation with you.
Is Credim certified for asbestos removal in Ostend?
Yes, Credim is a certified asbestos removal company and operates throughout Flanders, including Ostend. We carry out the work according to legal regulations and dispose of the asbestos airtight.
