If you have a house in Hasselt built before 2001, there is a chance that asbestos is present somewhere. It is often found in recognisable places: a corrugated roof on a garage, an old boiler, or that white, crumbly layer around the central heating pipes in the cellar. As long as you don't touch it, there is little to worry about. But as soon as you start renovating, insulating or replacing a roof, dust is released. And you don't want that in your lungs.

Credim is a licensed asbestos removal contractor and operates from Stabroek, but also in Hasselt and the rest of Limburg. We come to you, assess the situation and remove the asbestos professionally.

What asbestos do you come across in Hasselt?

The homes in Hasselt were often built in the 1960s, 1970s or 1980s. During that period, asbestos was used on a large scale. The most common applications in our region:

  • Asbestos pipe insulation around heating pipes, usually in the cellar, recognisable by a white-grey, crumbly layer wrapped in hessian.
  • Vinyl flooring with an asbestos-containing backing or black bituminous adhesive, often in kitchens or utility rooms.
  • Roof and wall cladding made of corrugated sheets or slates, especially on garages, sheds and canopies.

An asbestos survey will determine whether and where asbestos is present. Have this carried out by a certified asbestos expert. Credim will then remove what the survey identifies.

Pipe insulation: don't scrape it yourself

That white layer around your central heating pipes is not ordinary plaster. In houses from before the 1980s, it is often asbestos, usually still wrapped in hessian. As soon as you scrape or sand it, fibres are released. So: leave it alone and call in a professional. We remove pipe insulation using the legally required techniques, in a hermetic zone, however small the section.

Vinyl flooring: watch out for the black adhesive

Old vinyl sheets and tiles can have an asbestos-containing backing. The greatest risk lies in the black, brittle adhesive underneath. This 'cutback adhesive' was commonly used between 1955 and 1985. When such a floor is removed, that adhesive breaks and releases fibres. That is why this should be done by a licensed company. We remove the floor including the adhesive, so that afterwards you have a safe base for a new floor.

Roofs and corrugated sheets: large but manageable

An asbestos roof on your garage or shed is often large, but can be removed effectively. We work according to a fixed procedure: the roof is kept wet, the sheets are lifted intact and sealed airtight in foil of at least 100 microns. We then transport it to a licensed processing facility. You don't have to go to the recycling centre yourself.

Our approach on site

At Credim, we use three techniques, depending on the material and its condition. For undamaged, bonded asbestos, a simple handling may suffice, provided the fibre concentration remains low. For damaged or friable asbestos, we set up a hermetic zone with negative pressure. The air in that zone is filtered. Afterwards, we measure whether there are still fibres in the air.

We offer a free site visit in Hasselt for a site assessment. We look at the situation, discuss the options and provide a clear quote.

Good to know

Since 23 November 2022, an asbestos certificate has been mandatory when selling a home built before 2001. By 2032, every owner must have one.

Frequently asked questions

Can I remove asbestos myself in Hasselt?
You may only remove bonded, undamaged asbestos up to 35 m² yourself, provided you submit a demolition notification. Non-bonded materials, such as pipe insulation, and damaged asbestos must always be handled by a certified company.
How do I recognise asbestos pipe insulation?
It is a white-grey, crumbly layer around old central heating pipes, often wrapped in jute cloth. You cannot determine it visually with certainty; a sample taken by an asbestos expert will provide clarity.
What does asbestos removal cost in Hasselt?
The price depends on the type of asbestos, the quantity and the accessibility. Request a free quote from Credim; we will come by and give you a clear price.
How is asbestos disposed of?
Asbestos is packaged airtight in foil of at least 100 microns and transported to a certified processor. Private individuals may take up to 200 kg per year to the recycling park for free, but non-bonded asbestos may not be transported yourself.
Does Credim also work outside Hasselt?
Yes, Credim works throughout Flanders. We also come to the rest of Limburg and the province of Antwerp.
