  4. 04Also for professionals

Corrugated sheets, vinyl floors and pipe insulation are not the only materials that can contain asbestos. The plaster on the walls and ceilings of older homes and buildings can also contain asbestos fibres. You cannot tell by looking: asbestos plaster looks like ordinary plaster. When it is chipped off, ground or drilled, dust is released, and that is dust you do not want to breathe in.

Credim removes asbestos plaster for private individuals and professionals, always in a hermetic zone. Below you can read how to recognise it, why you should not tackle it yourself and how we go about it.

How do you know whether your plaster contains asbestos?

You cannot tell with certainty by eye. Asbestos was used in all kinds of building materials until 2001, so caution is advised with any building from before 2001. Certainty only comes from a sample and a laboratory analysis. Have these carried out by a certified asbestos expert. That expert also draws up the asbestos certificate. Credim does not draw up certificates, but does remove the asbestos listed in them.

What you should definitely not do in the meantime: scratch, sand, drill or chip off pieces to see what is underneath. The less you touch the plaster, the fewer fibres are released.

Why you should never do this yourself

When asbestos plaster is removed, there is a high chance of fibres being released. OVAM therefore lists plasterwork among the applications that only a certified asbestos removal contractor may remove, just like pipe insulation and the asbestos adhesive layer under floors. The exception that allows a private individual to remove bonded, undamaged and screwed material up to 35 m² themselves does not apply here. Anyone who starts chipping or grinding can spread fibres throughout the whole house.

Our approach: a hermetic zone

We always remove plaster in a hermetic zone. We seal the room airtight with sheeting, build an airlock and put the zone under negative pressure. The air is filtered continuously. Our staff wear disposable coveralls and respiratory protection. The plaster is kept wet and double-wrapped straight away. Afterwards the zone is cleaned and checked before we release it.

During a free site visit we look at the room and the substrate of the walls and ceilings, measure the surface area and you receive a clear quote.

Also for professionals

Asbestos plaster is also found in offices, commercial premises and other buildings from before 2001. For contractors, property managers and companies we plan the removal in consultation, also in combination with demolition works. Already have an asbestos certificate or inventory? Then we can usually quote a price straight away.

Good to know

Asbestos plasterwork is on OVAM's list of applications that only a certified asbestos removal contractor may remove. Removing it yourself is therefore not allowed, not even for a small piece.

Frequently asked questions

How do I recognise asbestos plaster?
Not with certainty by eye. Asbestos plaster looks like ordinary plaster. For a building from before 2001, have a sample taken by a certified asbestos expert. Only a laboratory analysis gives a definite answer.
Can I remove asbestos plasterwork myself?
No. OVAM lists plasterwork among the high-risk applications that only a certified asbestos removal contractor may remove. The exception for private individuals only applies to bonded, undamaged and screwed material up to 35 m², and plasterwork does not fall under it.
How does Credim remove asbestos plaster?
Always in a hermetic zone: the room is sealed airtight, put under negative pressure and the air is filtered. The plaster is kept wet, removed and packed airtight. The zone is then cleaned and checked.
What does removing asbestos plaster cost?
That depends on the surface area, the accessibility and the condition of the plaster. After a free site visit you receive a clear quote. Already have an asbestos certificate or inventory? Then we can usually quote a price straight away.
Do I need an asbestos certificate?
When selling a home built before 2001, an asbestos certificate has been mandatory since 23 November 2022. It is drawn up by a certified asbestos expert and issued by OVAM. Credim does not draw up certificates, but removes the asbestos listed in the certificate.
