  • If you own an old house in Bruges, you know the drill: a cellar from the seventies, a utility room with worn vinyl, or a shed with grey corrugated sheets. Asbestos is often present there. Not always visible, but it's there. As a certified asbestos removal company, we come from Stabroek to Bruges to safely remove that material.

Where asbestos turns up in Bruges homes

Bruges has many homes built before 2001. In those houses, as an asbestos removal company, we mainly come across three things. The best-known is asbestos on roofs and facades: corrugated sheets on sheds, garages, or the roof of an old commercial building. In addition, we often see asbestos around pipes. That asbestos-containing pipe insulation is usually found in the cellar, around the central heating pipes. It's that crumbly, white or grey layer, often wrapped in jute cloth. And then there's the asbestos in vinyl flooring. Especially in homes from the fifties to the eighties, asbestos fibres are present in the backing of vinyl sheets or tiles, and in the black bituminous adhesive.

Why you'd better not start on this yourself

As a private individual, you are allowed to remove only bonded asbestos at home yourself, and it must be undamaged and screwed, up to 35 square metres. But in practice, that is often difficult to assess. Damaged material, friable asbestos or glued floor coverings: that must always be done by a certified company. Especially if you're not sure whether something is asbestos, it's wise to have an asbestos expert take a sample first. Scraping or sanding suspicious pipe insulation yourself? Better not, because that releases fibres.

Our approach on site in Bruges

At Credim, we work with the three legally required techniques. For bonded applications with a low risk, a simple handling procedure suffices. For pipe insulation, we build a hermetic zone. And for damaged or friable asbestos, we build a hermetic zone with negative pressure. We work neatly and quickly, so that you notice as little of it as possible.

Airtight disposal, right up to the recycling park

All asbestos we remove is packaged airtight in foil of at least 100 microns. This allows it to be transported and processed according to OVAM regulations. You don't need to take anything to the recycling park yourself. We handle the entire process, from the initial inspection to the final check.

    Good to know

Since 23 November 2022, an asbestos certificate is mandatory when selling a home built before 2001. By 2032, every owner of such a building must have a certificate. A certificate is issued by a certified asbestos expert (ADI) and delivered by OVAM. Credim removes what the certificate identifies.

    Frequently asked questions

What does asbestos removal cost in Bruges?
The price depends on the type of asbestos, the quantity and the level of difficulty. Request a free site visit for a clear, tailored quote.
    Can I remove asbestos myself?
Only bonded, undamaged asbestos that is screwed and smaller than 35 m² may be removed by yourself, after a demolition notification. All other types, such as pipe insulation or damaged asbestos, must be handled by a certified company.
How do I recognise asbestos around my heating pipes?
It is often a crumbly, white or grey layer around old central heating pipes, usually in the basement. Sometimes it is wrapped in hessian cloth. You can only be sure via a sample analysis by an asbestos expert.
Do you also work in the centre of Bruges?
Yes, we work throughout Bruges and the rest of West Flanders. We also visit the city centre, where houses are often old and hard to access, for a site visit.
Is there asbestos in my old vinyl floor?
Vinyl sheeting or tiles from between 1955 and 1985 may have an asbestos-containing backing. The black bituminous adhesive can also contain asbestos. Always have this checked by a certified asbestos removal contractor.
