If you own a house in Leuven built before 2001, there's a good chance it contains asbestos somewhere. That doesn't have to be a problem as long as the material remains intact and you don't disturb it. But during a renovation, after a leak, or simply because you no longer want to see it, it has to go. And then you want it done properly.

Credim is a licensed asbestos removal contractor and works from Stabroek, but we regularly come to Leuven and the surrounding area. We know the typical asbestos applications in Leuven homes: the white, crumbly insulation around central heating pipes in cellars of houses from the 1960s and 1970s, old vinyl floors with their black adhesive layer, and the corrugated sheets on sheds or canopies that have been there for decades.

Pipe insulation: can you recognise it?

That whitish-grey, crumbly layer around your heating pipes is often asbestos. Usually there's a layer of jute fabric around it, which makes it look harmless. But as soon as you scratch or sand it, fibres are released. You can't determine by sight whether it's asbestos. A sample taken by an asbestos expert will give you a definitive answer. If it is asbestos, we remove it in a hermetic zone.

Vinyl floors and roofs

Old vinyl sheeting and tiles often contain an asbestos-containing backing layer. The real risk lies in the black bituminous adhesive underneath, especially when it becomes brittle. It's best not to disturb it yourself. Asbestos roofs and cladding, often corrugated sheets, are also still common on older homes and outbuildings. We remove them and dispose of the material in an airtight manner, as required.

Our approach on site

We work tidily and in accordance with the regulations. Depending on the job, we set up an airtight zone with negative pressure, work with a glove bag, or carry out a simple operation. Everything we remove is wrapped in foil of at least 100 microns and taken to a licensed processing facility.

Good to know

An asbestos certificate is requested from a certified asbestos expert. Credim removes the asbestos listed in the certificate but does not issue certificates itself.

Frequently asked questions

Can I remove asbestos myself in Leuven?
A private individual may only remove bonded, undamaged asbestos up to 35 m² themselves, and only if it is screwed and after a notification to the Environmental Counter. Anything that is friable, damaged or glued must be done by a certified removal company.
How do I know if there is asbestos in my home?
Have an asbestos inventory drawn up by a certified asbestos expert. He takes samples and issues an official certificate. The certificate shows where asbestos is present and in what condition.
Do you also work in Leuven and the surrounding area?
Yes, Credim works throughout Flanders, including Leuven and the rest of Flemish Brabant. We come for a site visit and carry out the removal wherever you live.
How long does asbestos removal take?
That depends on the amount and type of application. A simple job, such as a corrugated sheet roof, is often done in a day. For pipe insulation or a hermetic zone, it can take a bit longer. We always make that clear in advance.
What happens to the asbestos waste?
We package all asbestos airtight in foil of at least 100 microns and transport it to a certified processor.
